The Park Rapids School Board on Monday learned that Century Middle School Principal Shawn Andress has been named the Northern Division principal of the year for the Minnesota Association of Secondary School Principals.
“It is quite an honor to be selected as the middle school principal of the year for the division,” Superintendent Lance Bagstad said later. “We are proud of her.”
Bagstad also announced that Project 309 – regarding capital improvements sought by the district – will be resuming activities.
“We have scheduled a meeting to discuss the next steps and develop plans to move forward,” he said. “I’m hopeful there will be more information as to a plan to share by the next board meeting.”
In consent items and general business, the school board:
Approved the Pan O’Gold bread bid for the 2020-21 food service program, the only company to bid. Bimbo Bakeries declined to bid based on their capacity. Pan O’Gold’s prices for 2020-21 are $3.30 for 30 hamburger buns, $3.46 for 30 steak buns, $1.27 for a single loaf of bread (all the same as their 2019-20 prices) and $3.40 for 30 hot dog buns (up 10 cents from 2019-20).
Approved the Cass-Clay Dairy milk bid for 2020-21 food service. Prairie Farms (Dean Foods) also bid. Cass-Clay’s prices per half-pint are 17.5 cents for white 1 percent (up from 16.9 cents last year); 72 cents for lactose-free skim (up from 65 cents), 16.9 cents for white skim (up from 15.4 cents) and 18.7 cents for fat-free chocolate (up from 17.9 cents).
Approved the Pizza Ranch pizza bid for 2020-21 food service, the only bidder. Rocky’s and Pizza Hut declined to bid. Pizza Ranch’s price was $10 per 16-inch whole wheat crust, the same as last year.
Approved keeping school breakfast and lunch prices the same for students during the 2020-21 school year, while adult lunch prices will be adjusted to $3.85 from last year’s price of $3.75. Lunch prices are $2.40 for K-4, $2.50 for grades 5-8, $2.70 for 9-12 and 35 cents for milk. Breakfast prices are $1.55 for K-4, $1.80 for 5-12 and $2.35 for adults.
Hired Erika Strom as a high school English as a Second Language teacher; Nic Lembcke as head girls basketball coach; Noah Bone as C-team boys basketball coach; Jamie Nordick as junior varsity boys basketball coach; and Alissa Anderson as a 0.45-time blind/visually impaired teacher itinerant.
Accepted the resignations of Tarja Nelsen as junior high cross-country coach; Katie Eischens as assistant gymnastics coach; Katie Winters as assistant speech coach; and Nicole Walker as a paraprofessional.
Approved volunteer Katie Winters as speech coach.
Approved second readings of the student and staff handbooks for the Century Adventures after-school program, job descriptions for a custodial engineer and a maintenance custodian, and 11 policy updates.
The school board’s next meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday, DATE at the Frank White Education Center.
